About this training
Community Health Workers connect people to the care they need — doctors, benefits, rides, food, housing. You are the person who knows the system and walks alongside someone who does not.
This is Maryland's state-approved Community Health Worker class. Finish it and you can apply to the Maryland Department of Health for your certificate.
You do not need a degree or any health care background. You need to be 18 or older with a high school diploma or GED, and you need to care about the people around you.
- You are 18 or older
- You have a high school diploma or a GED
Leona McTaggart
Leona is a Community Health Worker at WVU Medicine Potomac Valley Hospital. She connects people and families to the help they need — care, benefits, education, support. She also works in long-term care as a Board Certified Advanced Activity Professional, helping older adults stay active and independent.
She built the SAPPHIRE Program, a fall prevention programme that won first place in a national award from CVS Pharmacy and the National Council on Aging. It worked well enough that New York City's Department for the Aging asked her to come and present it.
Both of her roles come back to the same thing: people make better choices when they can actually get to the information and support they need. That is what she teaches — and she is still doing the work while she teaches it.
The form opens in a new tab
Registration runs on our secure enrollment system, so it opens in a new tab and this page stays where it is behind it. Keep it open if you want the class details in front of you while you fill the form in.
It asks for some details the state needs us to collect, so set aside a few minutes.
